Iran’s Supreme National Security Council: Continuity After Raisi
The May 24 edition of the Iran Media Review highlights the Supreme National Security Council’s public messaging supporting the acting president following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.
As Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei approved the transfer of presidential functions and powers to First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, the Supreme National Security Council issued a statement declaring the Iranian armed forces’ support for Mokhber and emphasizing continuity in foreign policy.
- May 21: SNSC mouthpiece Nour News released a statement by the SNSC secretariat in the wake of the deaths of Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian:
- “Servants of the honorable people of Islamic Iran at the secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council draw public attention to the following … Safeguarding international borders and other fields of national security continues by vigilant security services, the police, and the armed forces … In the interim period, all institutions, intelligence agencies, security services, and military organizations support the honorable first vice president as the head of the executive branch of government … Constructive policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the region and the world will forcefully continue based on the principle of good neighborly relations and in line with the efforts of the martyred holy warrior and active member of the Supreme National Security Council His Excellency Dr. Amir-Abdollahian … The unified and vast presence of different political and social groups and currents at the funeral march of the honorable martyred president and other inestimable martyrs of this disaster guarantees the national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
