On September 29, Kuwait announced the passing of Emir Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah. Serving as foreign minister, prime minister, and, finally, emir, Sabah al-Ahmed played a defining role as a humanitarian and mediator, but he will be remembered most by his people as the father of modern Kuwait.
AGSIW offers reflections on Sabah al-Ahmed by former U.S. ambassadors to Kuwait, Deborah K. Jones (2008-11), Douglas A. Silliman (2014-16), Lawrence R. Silverman (2016-19), and Edward W. Gnehm, Jr. (1991-94), as well as former U.S. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Thomas R. Pickering (1989-1992).
