Miguel Azevedo

Vice-Chair of Investment Banking, Middle East and Africa, Citigroup

Miguel Azevedo is vice-chair of investment banking for the Middle East and Africa at Citigroup, a position he has held since 2023. In 2013, he became Citigroup’s head of investment banking for Africa (excluding South Africa and Egypt). In 2018, he was appointed head of investment banking for the Middle East and Africa (excluding South Africa) at Citigroup. Prior to working at Citigroup, Azevedo was a senior country advisor for Bank of America Merrill Lynch and an executive director at Goldman Sachs. He has an MBA in finance from Bayes Business School in London and a BSc in economics from Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon.

In the mergers and acquisitions space, Azevedo has a long career of over 25 years. He advised multibillion dollar transactions across four continents, from his native Portugal and Europe to Brazil, across Africa, and more recently the Middle East. In the debt capital markets space, Azevedo was a pioneer in advising debut issuers, both sovereign and corporate, from Africa looking to tap into global bond markets. In the equity capital markets space, Azevedo and the Citigroup team have been pioneers and clear leaders in the Middle East and Africa, leading more equity offerings than any other global investment bank. According to Euromoney, Citigroup’s team was the best advisory bank and/or investment bank in Africa (2020-23), the United Arab Emirates (2021-23), and the Middle East (2020, 2021, and 2023).

Azevdeo is a regular contributor to Financial Times, CNBC, and Bloomberg TV as well as a regular speaker at regional events, including the Africa Business Forum in Dubai, Investopia UAE in Dubai, the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, the World Economic Forum in Africa and the Middle East, and the Milken Institute in the United States, United Kingdom, and Middle East, among others. In 2023, at the African Development Bank Annual Meetings, Azevedo received the African Banker Icon award, a career recognition award from African Banker magazine. He has been a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council since 2018.
