The Middle East’s Coming Centrality: A Conversation With Jon Alterman

On October 4, AGSIW hosted a conversation with Jon Alterman, author of the recent essay "The Middle East's Coming Centrality."

Date

Oct 4, 2022

About the event

In a recent commentary for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, “The Middle East’s Coming Centrality,” Jon Alterman discusses the increasing significance of the Middle East, particularly the Gulf region. He argues that a growing consensus regarding a “pivot to Asia,” the focus on “great power competition” with China, and, especially, the need to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels will make the region more important to U.S. global strategy in the coming decades. Why is cooperation between the United States and its regional partners critical to advancing the interests of the United States amid increasing competition with China?

AGSIW was delighted to welcome Jon Alterman, a leading analyst of U.S. foreign policy in the Gulf and broader Middle East, for a conversation on current dynamics and coming trends for U.S. strategy in the region.
