About the event
On July 28, AGSIW hosted a virtual private roundtable on succession in Kuwait. The recent health issues of Emir Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah have revived concerns about succession in Kuwait. What would the implications of a transition in leadership be at the domestic, regional, and global levels? How will Sabah’s legacy translate into the next phase of Kuwait’s leadership? Who are the main contenders in the Kuwaiti line of succession, what are their odds, and how could each of them affect Kuwait foreign and domestic policies in the decades to come?
Ambassador Edward W. Gnehm, Jr., former U.S. ambassador to Kuwait and professor of Gulf and Arabian Peninsula affairs at the George Washington University, Ambassador Douglas A. Silliman, AGSIW president and former U.S. ambassador to Iraq and Kuwait, and Kristin Smith Diwan, AGSIW senior resident scholar, discussed these issues and more.
