Luay al-Khatteeb

Advisor, American University of Iraq-Baghdad; Honorary Professor, University of Exeter

Luay al-Khatteeb is an advisor to the American University of Iraq-Baghdad and an honorary professor at the University of Exeter. He is a former distinguished fellow at Columbia University and a former foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institution. He previously served as Iraq’s minister of electricity, acting minister of oil, and acting deputy prime minister for energy affairs.

His professional experience spans more than 33 years in business development and public policy, serving in executive capacities as a director and senior advisor to various multilateral institutions, international oil companies, commercial banks, and management consulting firms. He is a frequent commentator and public speaker on issues related to energy security, political economy, and Middle East geopolitics.

His writing has appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The New York Times, the Brookings Institution, Harvard University, Columbia University, the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, the Middle East Institute, The National Interest, Huffington Post, Al-Monitor, CNN, Middle East Economic Survey, Petroleum Economist, and The National (UAE), among others.

Khatteeb graduated from Kingston University with a BSc in business information technology and earned his PhD in political economy from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom.
