About the event

Almost a year after Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi was sworn into office, Iraq faces significant obstacles to securing long-term stability, despite considerable progress indicated by economic growth and greater security. Weak central and federal state institutions, often marred by overregulation, inefficiency, and corruption, continue to complicate state building efforts.

At this roundtable, part of AGSIW’s Iraq Initiative, H.E. Fuad Hussein discussed the wider government effort to rebuild the country after the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, and in particular, his ministry’s attempt to revamp the country’s financial sector. Ambassador Douglas A. Silliman, AGSIW president and former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, moderated the conversation.
