Iraq in a New Middle East: Government Formation and Regional Challenges

On May 12, AGSI will host a discussion on the new government in Iraq.

Date

May 12, 2026

Time

9:30am - 11:00am

About the event

Six months after the November 2025 parliamentary elections, Iraq has finally begun forming its new government. Following the designation of Ali al-Zaidi as Iraq’s prime minister candidate in April, attention has now turned to the formation of a Cabinet. The new heads of key ministries and power-sharing arrangements that emerge from these appointments will play a decisive role in shaping Iraq’s future political landscape.

Meanwhile, rising tensions between the United States and Iran continue to loom over the process. Developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz as well as the influence of armed groups continue to have direct implications on Iraq’s domestic politics.

At this pivotal moment, Iraq must navigate competing pressures with a clear and strategic vision for its future. What are the challenges ahead in Iraq’s government formation process, and how will it be affected by the U.S. conflict with Iran? How might Iraq straddle these challenges and find opportunities to push itself toward a visionary future?
