Book Talk: Gulf Women’s Lives: Voice, Space, Place

On October 18, AGSIW hosted a discussion on the lives of Gulf women, exploring how Gulf women negotiate spaces through their writing and focusing on women’s narratives.

Date

Oct 18, 2024

About the event

Muslim and Arab women, specifically those from the Gulf Arab countries, are challenged by stereotypes and prejudices rooted in religion, culture, and gender identity. In this new publication, Gulf Women’s Lives: Voice, Space, Place, editors Emanuela Buscemi, Shahd Alshammari, and Ildiko Kaposi challenge narratives of submissiveness, powerlessness, and victimization to uncover women’s social, cultural, and political contributions in their countries of origin or residence.

Contributors to this edited volume, most of them coming from the Gulf, investigate how Gulf women negotiate spaces through their writing; it focuses on women’s narratives to offer critical perspectives on how women in the Gulf exist within public and private spaces and how voice and agency are part of their conversations in various spheres.
