Research Associate (Politics, Society, and Culture)

Department/Team: Resident Scholars

Period: Part time (20-25 hours/week, no benefits)

Compensation: $25/hour

Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid)

This is a part-time nonexempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Research associates must be local in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and eligible to work in the US. 

About AGSI

The Arab Gulf States Institute (AGSI) is an independent, nonprofit institution dedicated to highlighting the importance of the relationship between the United States and the Gulf region through free and open exchange of multiple points of view on issues that concern the Gulf.

Position Summary

  • Provide research assistance and support to resident scholars at AGSI, helping develop analysis on Gulf politics, society, culture, and arts, with an emphasis on youth initiatives
  • Monitor contemporary developments in the Gulf countries and U.S. policy and provide reviews of regional and international media
  • Conduct interviews and write on trends in arts, society and youth spaces
  • Provide communications and logistical support to resident scholars, and perform additional tasks as requested
  • Work with the scholar, the development team and leadership to develop fundraising/grant proposals
  • When their primary duties are met, research associates are encouraged to publish articles and participate in broader activities of the institute

Qualifications

  • Work toward MA/PhD in international affairs, political science, or related areas in Middle East politics and culture encouraged
  • Strong academic record, outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills demonstrated
  • Fluency in English, including ability to write persuasively, required, and fluency in Arabic strongly recommended
