About the event

It has been a year since Haitham bin Tariq al-Said ascended the throne upon the death of the long-time ruler and founder of modern Oman, Sultan Qaboos bin Said. In his inaugural year, Sultan Haitham faced the twin crises of the coronavirus pandemic and oil demand collapse all while attempting a fundamental restructuring of Oman’s governing structure and economy. This panel analyzed the challenges facing, and the strategic responses of, the new sultan in government, the economy, and foreign policy. What has been accomplished? And what can be expected in the years to come?
