On January 19, AGSIW hosted a discussion on art in Saudi Arabia.

Date

Jan 19, 2024

About the event

As Saudi Arabia mobilizes its vast resources behind the economic and social priorities of its Vision 2030 strategy and seeks new terms of engagement with the international community, art is taking center stage. In their book Art in Saudi Arabia: A New Creative Economy?, Rebecca Anne Proctor and Alia Al-Senussi look at the historical and contemporary contexts for this recent state-led focus on art in the kingdom and at the opportunities and pitfalls, not just for Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning art world, but for practitioners and professionals around the world. Drawing from the co-authors’ experiences and interviews with artists and practitioners, this book spotlights the role that contemporary art will play in Saudi Arabia’s push for cultural diplomacy as well as sweeping domestic reforms.
